Settling In: Supporting Successful Transitions
Why it matters
Starting or returning to a setting can be a big transition. For children with SEND, new people, routines, spaces and expectations can take time to understand. A successful settling-in period is not about how quickly a child separates from their parent or joins every routine; it is about helping them feel safe, known and secure.
In practice
Take time to find out what helps this child settle. Ask families about familiar routines, communication, interests, comfort items and what they notice when their child is becoming unsure or overwhelmed. A familiar adult, photographs, a favourite activity, a predictable arrival routine or a quieter place to begin the day can all help.
Some children will need a slower transition or repeated opportunities to become familiar with people and spaces. Use what you learn during settling in to shape the support around the child rather than expecting them to fit immediately into existing routines.
Top Tip
Go at the child’s pace. Watch what they are telling you and let that guide the settling-in period – sometimes it’s the adults who aren’t quite ready to move on! If the child is showing you they feel safe, secure and ready, trust them.
