What are Lewisham Parent Champions?
Parent Champions are volunteers who talk to other parents / carers in their local area and signpost them to local services. Parent Champions also promote the free early education entitlements for the Government scheme for 9-month-olds, 2-year-olds, and 3&4-year-olds.
Our Parent Champions must live in the borough of Lewisham and must be available to do outreach for a minimum of two hours per week.
Lewisham Parent Champion scheme is part of the Parent Champion national network which is supported by the Coram Family and Childcare Trust. Coram currently has 36 schemes throughout the country, including many of the London Boroughs which it supports.

Books Together
What is Books Together?
The Books Together programme works to support parents of young children to read together regularly through a series of informative and interactive sessions. The programme will provide useful tips, resources and ideas to encourage families to discover the joy and fun of reading together.
The project is supported by the Mercers’ Company as trustee of the Charity of Sir Richard Whittington. Books Together combines the unique peer-led model of our Parent Champions programme with Coram Beanstalk’s extensive experience of providing effective reading support.
Books Together programme, had been successfully running in Lewisham since November 2023. It is delivered jointly with Coram Beanstalk and local Parent Champion volunteers in local communities across three interactive sessions. These sessions include fun activities for children and share useful tips and ideas for parents to get children interested in books and reading with their parents at home.
Books Together will provide a supportive and engaging environment to help more families discover the significant benefits of reading together regularly. Through books and storytelling, the project will work to increase children’s literacy and language, skills, improve school readiness and support more parents to access local library services. Together, it will spotlight the inspiring power of simply picking up a book and getting lost in a truly great story.
If you are a parent/carer interested in participating in our Books Together programme, please contact fis@lewisham.gov.uk and we can let you know where the next sessions will be held.
If you are a Lewisham Primary School interested in running Books Together sessions for families in your school, please contact leila.dantes-michael@lewisham.gov.uk
