Transitioning into Primary School - Step into School 2026
As we approach the period when children begin their transition to primary school, we know many of you will already be planning to support children and families through this important stage. This article brings together key information about Lewisham’s transition arrangements and highlights what is new for this year.
New for 2026 - Step into School
Following the introductory sessions at last term’s Early Years Briefings, Lewisham will shortly be going live with Step Into School. This is a secure EYFS transition platform designed to strengthen continuity between early years settings and schools.
Step Into School enables early years settings and primary schools to:
- share key transition information securely
- identify support needs ahead of school entry
- support a smooth, child‑centred transition into Reception
Many Lewisham schools are already familiar with this approach through Six Into Seven, used for Year 6 to Year 7 transition.
You will receive an invitation email with instructions on how to access Step Into School and begin uploading information. Please note - due to issues with importing data, they will be a short delay in receiving this email, but we hope this will be resolved shortly. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Once you are using Step Into School, this will replace the Lewisham Starting School Summary, and you will not need to complete this document separately for children uploaded to the platform.
Children with SEND
For children with SEND, we ask that you also complete a Transition Passport alongside the information shared via Step Into School. The passport provides more detailed information about a child’s strengths, interests, what helps them feel safe and settled, and any support they may require.
Where a SEN Inclusion Fund (SENIF) application has been made, this information can also be shared with the receiving school.
Useful Documents
Thank you for your continued support in ensuring strong transitions for children across Lewisham.
We hope this information is helpful. If you have any questions or would like further support, please do not hesitate to get in touch early.years@lewisham.gov.uk
