Refugee Week – 16th to 23rd June 2025
This year’s theme, “Community as a Superpower”, invites young children to explore the idea that even small voices can make a big impact. By learning about community, children begin to understand the power of kindness, inclusion, and empathy.
Age-appropriate books such as "Story Boat" or "Lubna and the pebble" offer meaningful ways to introduce the experiences of refugees, helping children connect with stories of hope, resilience, and belonging. Through engaging, creative activities, children can discover how their actions and voices can help build bridges and foster a sense of togetherness.
This theme provides a valuable starting point for children to see that simple, everyday acts of compassion can transform the world around them.
The National Literacy Trust is free to join and has a guide you can download for ideas for activities for 3–5-year-olds as well as a comprehensive booklist. Read one of their recommended stories and encourage discussion about the content afterwards. “Tell me how the story made you feel”, “Tell me how you think (character) felt”.
