Working Within Ordinarily Available Provision
Why it matters
Ordinarily Available Provision (OAP) describes the high-quality inclusive practice that should be in place for all children.
It forms the foundation before additional or more targeted support is considered.
In practice
This includes approaches such as clear routines, well-organised environments, visual supports, and responsive adult interactions. These are not “extra” strategies — they are part of everyday good practice that benefit all children.
When these elements are consistently in place, it becomes easier to identify when a child may need support beyond what is ordinarily available, and to plan more targeted interventions.
Top Tip
When everyone is doing the same thing well, differences become clearer and so do the next steps.
Our upcoming training on the Graduated Approach will explore how Ordinarily Available Provision underpins effective Assess–Plan–Do–Review cycles.
