The Maths Champions Programme

Nursery CountingThe Maths Champions programme is a national early years initiative developed by the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) to strengthen the quality of mathematics teaching and learning in early years settings and school nurseries. The programme focuses on building practitioner confidence, improving mathematical interactions, and creating rich, playful environments where young children can develop strong early number sense.

Maths Champions supports settings to:

  • Develop practitioner knowledge and confidence in early mathematical development
  • Embed maths within everyday routines, play, and continuous provision
  • Use high‑quality interactions to extend children’s mathematical thinking
  • Create enabling environments that promote exploration of number, pattern, shape, space, and measure
  • Track progress and evaluate impact through reflective tools and action planning

Strengthen leadership of maths through a designated “Maths Champion” who drives improvement across the setting.

The programme combines professional development, practical resources, and ongoing support to help settings create a maths‑rich culture. Its aim is to ensure that all children - particularly those who may be at risk of falling behind - develop strong foundations in mathematical understanding through meaningful, playful and engaging experiences.
