Using the Assess–Plan–Do–Review Cycle
Why it matters
The Assess–Plan–Do–Review cycle (graduated approach) supports practitioners to respond to children’s needs in a structured and purposeful way. It moves practice beyond “trying things” to understanding what works and why.
In practice
This might begin with careful observation to understand a child’s strengths and areas of need. Practitioners then plan targeted support, implement strategies within everyday routines, and take time to review what difference this has made.
For example, if a child is finding it difficult to join group activities, a plan may include adapting the environment, reducing group size or introducing visual support. The key is returning to review: Did this help? What changed? What do we do next?
Top Tip
The review stage is the most important part — it turns everyday practice into informed next steps.
Look out for upcoming training on the Graduated Approach, where we will explore how Assess–Plan–Do–Review can be used to evidence impact and strengthen inclusive practice.
