Home Learning Environment (HLE) – Ideas and information that can be shared with your families
The summer break offers wonderful opportunities for children to learn, explore and develop through everyday experiences. We encourage families to make the most of local opportunities while balancing screen use with active, hands-on play.
Ideas families can enjoy together:
- Visit your local library and take part in the Summer Reading Challenge. Sharing stories together develops language, imagination and a lifelong love of reading.
- Explore local parks, woodlands and nature reserves. Create simple scavenger hunts, collect natural treasures, look for insects or talk about seasonal changes.
- Practise water safety. Whether visiting paddling pools, beaches or rivers, children should always be supervised around water.
- Develop healthy hydration habits. Encourage children to drink water regularly, particularly during warm weather.
- Be active together. Walking, scooting, cycling, ball games, den building and gardening all help develop children's physical skills, confidence and wellbeing.
- Get creative at home. Junk modelling, drawing, cooking, music and imaginative play all support problem-solving and communication skills.
