💧 Developing an Effective Water Station

Girl drinking waterAlthough autumn has arrived, many children continue to spend significant time outdoors and can become thirsty through active play. Easy access to drinking water throughout the day supports children's health, wellbeing and independence.

A well-planned water station can also provide valuable opportunities for learning.

What makes an effective water station?

✅ Accessible throughout the day

✅ Clearly labelled with photographs, symbols or visual prompts

✅ Age-appropriate cups and jugs that children can use independently

✅ Regularly checked, cleaned and replenished

✅ Located where children can safely access it both indoors and outdoors

Opportunities for Learning

A water station can support many areas of the EYFS:

Communication and Language

  • Introducing language such as full, empty, half-full, pour and refill.
  • Encouraging children to ask for help or explain what they are doing.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Developing independence and self-care skills.
  • Supporting children to recognise when they feel thirsty.

Physical Development

  • Pouring, filling and carrying cups and jugs.
  • Developing hand-eye coordination and fine motor control.

Mathematics

  • Comparing amounts.
  • Exploring capacity through full, empty, more and less.
  • Counting cups, pours or refills.

Reflective Questions for Leaders

  • Can children access drinking water independently throughout the day?
  • Do all children know where to find water?
  • Is water available both indoors and outdoors?
  • How are practitioners encouraging children to stay hydrated?
  • Could the water station offer further opportunities for language, maths and independence?

Top Tip: Consider adding a small mirror, photographs, visual prompts or simple "I can pour my own drink" cards to encourage independence and engagement.

A water station is much more than a place to get a drink. It can be a valuable part of the enabling environment, supporting children's health, independence, language development and mathematical thinking.
